Thank you for your comments. About the set mining im not really sure whether or not we have implied odds enough. From my cash-game background I havent thought much about this and was thinking 40BBs was good enough, but as you point out after 3beting his effective stack is only 32BB.

His range should be rather wide as I pointed out earlier which makes me inclined to agree with you. We won´t get paid enough the times we actually hit our set.

At what stack depths do you think that set mining is profitable? Is there a video about this or anything written? Ofc it depends on the villain and his range but I think its important to have some rules around these things.

If I 4bet/fold with 22-66 my call range will narrow down to 8,7%. Compared to my fold range of 16% this is quite big isnt it. If I add 22-66 to my 4bet/fold range that is expanding to 5,3% and my 4bet/call remains 2,6%. Im afraid this is quite exploitable?

Im referring to online poker. But you make an interesting point about live poker.

Post | CobbV posted in MTT: Constructing preflop ranges

I am an old 1/2 cash-game player who just began playing again after 4 years off from poker. I have a quite understanding of poker theory but havent played much MTT at all.

My goal is to learn how to think around my preflop ranges to be able to set some rules of thumb when I play. To do this my plan is to analyze hands that I play and hands from the videos posted. I need some help to get started though and would be pleased to here some comments on my thinking.

What I have to be thinking about before a preflop decision as I understood is
Position
Stack sizes
Player type
ICM

To make it simple - I choose to not think about ICM right now, and the player types I meet is almost always weak because I start out at low stakes MTT/sng.

Hand 1:
Blinds 2800/5600, antes total 700. Im at the BTN with 60BB. SB has 17BB and BB has 40BB.

Okey, I have position and a quite deep stack. SB has 17BB which makes him quite likely to jam which will narrow down my opening range a bit. BB should have a quite wide 3bet range because of my position and our stack sizes.

First of all I want to construct an opening range from this specific hand. Then I want to know which of these hand i fold, which of them i call, which of them i 4bet/fold and which of them i 4bet/call/jam.

I´ll make a try and then I would love to here some comments on my ranges.

Opening with 22+, A2s+, A2o+, 56s+, any broadway and K9s, Q9s and J9s. This is a 30% opening range.

If SB shoves
- I call with 88+, AQo+, AQs+, KQs. Which is 6%.

If BB 3bets around 2,5x I need a calling range, folding range and a 4bet/call and 4bet/fold range.
- Call with: 22-AA, AJs+, KJs+, KQo, AJo. Which is 11%
- Fold with: A2o-ATo, 56s-JTs, J9s, Q9s, K9s, KTs, QTs and JTs, JTo, QTo, KTo, KJo, QJo. Which is 16%.
- 4 bet call: QQ+, AKs, AKo. Which is 2,6%
- 4 bet fold: A2-ATs, KJs. Which is 3%

As you might have understood I havent done the math to try to make this GTO or anything. My thoughts:

Quite narrow opening range because of the 17BB blind. I call with 6/30 which is pretty small percentage but shouldnt be exploitable on a low stake tournament (?).

I call BB with 11%, all low pairs because of set mining odds and all high pairs of obvious reasons.
I fold 16%. KJo and QJo im not really sure what to do with.
I 4bet/call with 2,6%. Should this range we wider?
4bet/fold with 3%. AXs and KJs because they have blockers and if called they have OK equity.

Any constructive criticism is appreciated!

Hi guys. I just joined runitonce after 2 years break from poker. I made my living from poker before I started studying but I havent played for 2 years. Now im planning to play in the summer to make some extra cash hopefully :)

Are there any video-playlist anyone can recommend, or just good videos? I played mostly 0,5/1 and sometimes 1/2 before i quit playing. Cheers
