Finish your degree - poker will always be there. You can take a shot whenever you want in life, but if you don't succeed you will have your degree to fall back on. It may take you places you would never dream of.

Final update: Played tournaments a few months, then some NLHE cash. Breakeven. Extremely frustrated. Got a job offer in finance - accepted.

Very happy with my life now. I make six figures/year doing something I really like. The poker grind is over. Now I only play some occational live cash games for fun - never online.

Final advice: Stay in school - it's very important to have an education if you fail at poker.

Comment | C-bet commented on 200 Zoom (and up?)

I'm glad you keep reporting despite the current poor results. With summer coming up your kids will hopefully be healthy and your results improve.

I think that Zoom games are much tougher than regular games. Maybe try playing some regular games for a while? There you can table select and only play tables with at least two recreational players. I only play NL200 on PokerStars Friday and Saturday evening. The rest of the week I play NL100 on other sites. This is the most profitable weekly schedule for me. Good luck!

Excellent video; you explain your thought process very well!

Comment | C-bet commented on TPGK fold to raise?

I would bet/fold flop. He has raised a c-b only 1 of 17 (3-b pot), so his X/R should indicate a range of sets, top two pair and FD. Against this range you hate almost any turn and have to fold when he bombs.

Great analysis in your video!

Jan. 31, 2015 | 10:48 a.m.

Liked your video. Analyzing opponents becomes more important as you move up in stakes.

I play NL100 as my main stake and will add one NL200 table when I find a particularly good table. This has worked out fine for me. I play my best game when I have no more than 5 tables. Playing 10-12 tables takes me down to a break-even player, and often results in poor decision-making in critical spots. I make better reads when I play 4-5 tables, and I also have time to write notes while playing.

If it hurts a lot to lose one buyin at NL400 I don't think you should play it. Take it nice and easy with a few shots at NL200 until you feel comfortable with the swings at that stake before you go higher.

GL!

Focus on what you can change. Watch RIO-videos, play poker when you are mentally balanced and focus on improving. You are the master of your mind and feelings.

Comment | C-bet commented on 16nl zoom, 2 loose turn?

I would have played the hand exactly as you did. Being aggressive with your combodraw on the turn sets up interesting future scenarios against villain. If called, he will perceive you as a loose aggressive gambler and pay your future valuebets more lightly. When folded he will remember your line and be more careful (not doublebarreling). WP

Stick to cash NL50 and NL100. Many solid tournament grinders experience 1000BI(avg.) downswings (even RIO-instructors). With your current bankroll start grinding NL50; move up to NL100 when you have 10k.

GL, I think you will succeed!

Hi Mike, welcome to the RIO community. You will find plenty of great PLO-videos. Watch Tom Coldwell's videos first, then move on. GL at the tables!

Great video! Nice format and well explained. 42:10 Since the A is in our CC range, I think we should bet our hand on the turn to charge his draws. He will probably check back most of his range and we will lose value by letting him draw for free.

Dec. 7, 2014 | 2:07 p.m.

Please play no more than 3 tables next time, it will make it much easier for you to comment the interesting spots.

August update:

Played 10k hands at PLO50. Did not play my best and barely managed a zero result (rakeback included). Got very frustrated, is this really how I want to spend my life?

Decided to take a break from PLO and play some tournaments. Enjoyed it a lot. Watching videos, started using the Holdem Resources Calculator to check the accuracy of my raise/reraises. Making some profits, looking forward to the WCOOP in September :-)

Aug. 18, 2014 | 9:57 a.m.

Short update: I have played some PLO200 and got crushed. The regs are very tough and aggro, I didn't feel comfortable playing at that stake at all. Also running below All-In EV is not helping...

Dropped down to PLO100 and could not play my A-game. Bluffing too much and terrible hero calls. Very frustrating.

Dropped down to PLO50 and now the game is easy again :-)

Goal for august: Play at PLO50 or below to regain confidence. Do my best to achieve my monthly profit goal (winnings + rakeback) of €5000. Continue watching at least one RIO-video per day. Report in this journal september 1.

I agree, this time I was too careful and missed value. The river was Ah, they both check-fold.

July 30, 2014 | 8:24 p.m.

BB: 20.55
HJ: 60.13
CO: 53.56
BN: 50 (Hero)
SB: 69.13
CO: 65/2/1,1 6,4k hands Calling station (big loser)
BB: 38/21/7,4 56 hands Unknown finnish player, probably competent
Preflop (0.75) (5 Players)
Hero was dealt 6 8 Q 9
HJ folds, CO calls 0.50, Hero calls 0.50, SB folds, BB checks
I want to play a pot in position with the losing player. I choose not to raise because the aggro finnish player in BB could decide to reraise me and then I would have to fold (SPR too low with my marginal hand).
Flop (1.75) 4 5 J (3 Players)
BB checks, CO checks, Hero checks
Draw heavy board. I don't think I can force them out by betting here so I check behind.
Turn (1.75) 4 5 J 7 (3 Players)
BB bets 1.64, CO calls 1.64
I turn the nuts. BB bets big and CO calls. I can call and wait for a safe river or raise to charge the draws. There are so many bad cards on the river; spades, clubs or board pairing. If I raise I'm afraid BB is freerolling me with a straight + flushdraw and CO is certainly calling if he has a flush draw. Any recommendations???

Good start!

Your EV-line is going in the right direction and you are already working on plugging leaks. I recommend you post HH in the PLO Low Stakes section, otherwise this thread is going to be incredibly long.

When it comes to playing at different sites with your bankroll, I think you have to consider how easy it will be to transfer funds if you bust on one site. If you can do it rather quickly and without too high fees I think you can treat it as one roll. I prefer to have 50BI on one site to prevent the bad runs from influencing my mood so much :-)

July 27, 2014 | 6:51 p.m.

I started at PLO50 in april and have recently moved up to PLO200. I don't feel very comfortable at PLO200 yet, so I mainly play PLO50 and PLO100. Here is my journal: C-bet journal

Comment | C-bet commented on Low rundown pre btn spot

These doublesuited rundowns play best HU, in multiway pots you risk that both your straight- and flushdraws are dominated. Both HJ and CO seem to be callingstations, so they are likely to call a raise from you. I would fold preflop.

Good luck on your PLO journey tonic1223!

I started playing omaha in april and must warn you that variance is much higher in PLO than in NLHE. So many situations occur where it is correct for both players to go all-in. I have been as much as 64 BI below EV, and Tom Coldwell was running more than 100 BI below EV. Just to warn you.....

I agree with you that it is important to get away from the rake trap at micro PLO, but I think the best solution is to deposit more when starting out. Not having a super aggressive BRM. According to your plan you will have to drop down from PLO50 to PLO10 if you lose 12BI at PLO50. That is very likely to occur. I think it will be very frustrating to start over at PLO10 when you just were at PLO50. And when you eventually have climbed up to PLO50 the same thing is likely to happen again....

This is just some friendly advice from someone who is walking the same path as you are :-)

Good luck with your plan! Since you play mtts and sngs I recommend you study the Nash charts until you have them internalized. Bubble play is also very important; tight when short and hyperaggro when bigstack.

July 22, 2014 | 9:27 p.m.

You are right, this is a fold. I overvalued my wrap and pushed AI. HJ has TcTs6c6s - a flopped set. BN has AhKdJd5d - two pair, a gutter and a backdoor flushdraw. I had 26%EQ in the main pot (+some split%) and 27%EQ(+some split%) in the side pot.

July 21, 2014 | 8:50 p.m.

Hand History | C-bet posted in PLO: PLO100: Flop a wrap, get it in???
CO: 100
BN: 325.38
SB: 87
BB: 202.70
UTG: 104.01 (Hero)
HJ: 20.87
HJ: 50/17/0 6 hands
BN:44/26/12 99 hands

Not regulars at this stake.
Preflop (1.50) (6 Players)
Hero was dealt J 8 Q A
Hero raises to 3.50, HJ calls 3.50, CO folds, BN calls 3.50, SB folds, BB folds
Flop (12) T 5 K (3 Players)
Hero bets 6.73, HJ raises to 17.37, and is all in, BN raises to 70.06
I flop a wrap, and with the shortstack to my left I choose to c-bet just over half pot. I hope to entice him to move all in, followed by a call by BN. Then my plan was to raise pot to push BN out. Instead BN raises full pot and I am in an awkward spot. I have som equity regardless of their holdings, but do I really want to invest another 93bb in this spot???
