i know there are a lot of questions but maybe this one can be answered with ease;

Would there be a selection for mixed games like draw/badugi/etc and stud/razz/etc if this ever goes down?

Yeah I agree with you in regards to flopzilla. I think a few programs on my original list do what flopzilla does (board texture given a range/hand) as a side feature.

I'm still debating on getting either crev, or odds oracle. I do play a few other games so I think odds oracle might be more useful for me.

Trying to think what is a good program to purchase for my poker studying.off the tables.

So far it seems it's between:
PPT Odds Oracle
CardrunnersEV
PokerRanger
PokerJuice
Flopzilla
Equilab

Which would you say is the most useful for a poker player to keep their edge against all the gto/software wizards? (not really game specific, hence the inclusion of PokerJuice)., Feel free to add any program I missed.

@ 8:42
might it not have been worth calling since maybe he thinks you are weak due to checking back the turn after you cbet the flop. And a straight is certainly one of the best bluff catchers in this scenario

By the way: Awesome format! Very informative and in-depth. Keep em' coming!

I'd look into buying Seven-Card Stud for Advanced Players. I have it and can say there's lots of good info in it that will get you beating small-mid stakes in no time. Even Brian Hastings said it was a really good book after he won the WSOP 10k Stud event.

Besides that, Joe Tall has quite a few good videos on DC (From a Donk to a Stud, Nightmare on 7th street, and The Situation (which is for stud8)). Also I think Ceegee has some videos on Cardrunners and he's a bast when it comes to stud games.

How about a Beating the Micros series for us essential members? A lot of sites have something like this where it's a 5-8 part series where it's not really for beginners but micro grinders hoping to move up to small stakes ($1/2+)

Preferably PLO since that is the future ;) (and since CR/DC has quite a lot of these for NLHE..i mean pretty much everyone is solid at NLHE and with PLO maybe there are some advanced topics that can help us improve that we don't know about and is the reason we are not able to move up)

As for studying:
Finishing up my 1st read of Small Stakes Holdem (considered the Bible of Limit Holdem)

Usually I would re read it for a more thorough digestion but I reaaallly want to start reading Stoxtraders book; Winning in Tough Holdem Games. From what I hear it's a bit outdated but does have a solid blind vs blind/stealing section which is pretty damn important in LHE. Plus it's got a lot of numbers/data/charts which is really interesting in and of itself. So after I read this I'll go back and re-read both of them again and really get it implanted in my head.

Oh and next goal - Become a RIO Fixed Limit/Mixed Game coach! Teach you guys how sexy and fun Fixed Limit can be! :P There is just sooo much action and it's a lot faster play than BigBet games. I also really like how when I play FLO8 and Stud8 I don't feel like I'm playing a bot or a statistical analyst inputting ranges into a solver while we are in the hand. Not in mixed games, just pure action and gambol but with enough depth for there to be skill edges.

Horrible start to my morning. Being card dead at Stud Hi lo sucks and then combine that with not hitting your hi's and lo's and having to forfeit a big pot on 5-7th st can really put a dent in your stack.

And that is what happened when I began my day, losing 27BBs in Stud 8 ($0.25/0.50 stakes).
Plus a few BBs in LHE.

Had to take a break. Took a shower, boiled some coffee and went in for round #2. Suffice it to say the break was much needed and proved successful.

FLO8 - $0.25/0.50
+$2.98

LHE - $0.25/0.50
+$6.65

Stud8 - $0.25/0.50
+7.90

And just to prove these numbers are real here is the summary of my table buy in/cash-outs as per Bovadas transaction page: (I imagine I have to prove this if I ever want to find a backer and since I don't have a tracker for Stud8 and my HEM only works for Holdem and not for FLO8 maybe posting these images will prove I'm not lying.

I know I've been saying I'll try and post hands but its soooo tedious to post Stud and FLO8 hands since I have to do it by hand. Ugh...

Pretty awesome session today. Went something like this:

Bovada:
+20.00 ($10 from LHE, $10 from Stud8) $0.10/0.25 & $0.25/0.50 respectively

ACR:
+6 ($2 from Stud8, $2 from FLO8) $0.04/0.08 & 0.02/0.04 respectively
and some earlier FLO8 and LHE sessions (both HU)

So I've been playing more Stud8 and FLO8 on Bovada. I'm still trying to read up on NL but I can't seem to get past being break-even/losing (which is why I decided to study more than play). I still get that itch to grind though but at least I'll be grinding games I know I'm +EV at.

I'll be playing more Stud8 on Bovada and FLO8 on ACR (they have smaller stakes for FLO8). I think my NLHE game will be put on the back-burner for now. I'll still be studying but I really feel my strengths lie in Fixed Limit variants, especially LHE, FLO8, & Stud8 (Draw games too like 2-7TD and Badugi).

Also these are the games I aspire to play in the future at higher stakes and even in tournaments (especially at the WSOP).

I'll also be ordering Ray Zees Hi-Lo Split for Advanced Players. My fundamentals are pretty solid but I'm sure it can't hurt to read the so -called bible for Hi-Lo games. I'm also in the process of watching a few videos from DC, mainly:
The Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment
From a Donk to a Stud
The Situation (Stud Hi-Lo Series by Joe Tall)

This week will be mostly studying. I'm talking 80/20 ratio of studying to playing.

I've come realize how much I am lacking in certain and even basic fundamentals. I've noticed when playing that I am not asking myself why I am doing certain plays. I've sort of gone into auto pilot mode. At the stakes im playing this is a HUGE mistake. There is so much room for exploitation at the micros that it's so -EV not to take into account every possible detail that can give you an edge.

Something that helped me figure this out, interestingly enough was Jason Somerville's WCOOP Final Table stream. The soon to be infamous QJ hand where his opponent had a HUGE range advantage over Jasons hand. But Jason is a player who, if offered amazing pod odds, can't resist continuing. This led him to lose a pot where he was completely dominated throughout the entire hand.

I'm still trying to evaluate the pros and cons of certain range advantages but I think in some situations not even good pods odds is enough to outweigh the inherent range disadvantage.

I won't pretend I know exactly what i am talking about after watching a few videos on the subject because I don't. However I realize that just knowing how important this concept is can really help your poker game. This has also sprung up a few more ideas I want to explore. And I feel if I play one extra hand of poker without the knowledge of certain fundamentals it's comparative to a soldier going to battle without any prior training.

Sept. 8, 2015 | 3:17 p.m.

I am browsing the NLHE and PLO forum and in threads where people post hand histories for analysis their hand histories shows the suits next to the card number/letter next to it. For example:

Preflop:
Hero is dealt 2 (clubs) 2 (spades)

but instead of the word club/spade you get the symbol for it. How do I do this when posting my own HHs?

Thanks!
That's probably me. I've been playing a lot of LHE lately. And now have even started playing HULHE since ACR has small stakes 2max tables (0.02/0.04 & 0.04/0.08)

Mini update:
Found my USB that had my copy of Blackrains ebook, "Crushing the Micros" so I'm going to try and go over that tonight. Also was able to find Fees old 6max ebook on the net. I haven't heard much about it and I'm sure its pretty dated (2008 or something) but I'm sure I can find a few gems in a book written by someone as intelligent as him in regards to NL/poker.

I figured I can start playing solid ABC poker ( playing optimal VPIP/PFR/3bet styles) now that my bankroll has more than 30BIs for NL2.

Will try to post some hands after I'm done reading a few chapters from these books. Oh and one other thing, I'm going to start posting mini cliffs of what I learned from my study sessions. I saw someone do this on 2+2 and think it's a good idea, at least to try and get it planted in my head.

It's true what they say; after an upswing you exp one of the worst downswings.
Just had a horrible 6max bovada session. Cooler after Cooler. I have a notepad of all the beats and i have 12 coolers and only 3 pots i won that were pretty big.

I tried really hard to fight through it but my small bankroll just couldn't hand the coolers. I wasn't properly rolled for NL5 (the lowest limits offered on Bovada) so I was just sort of "shot taking". Usually I deposit $20-$30 and just pray I run good. But man, all those bad beats, it was too much. On the bright side I kept my composure and I managed to play the same as I did yesterday (the comment above this one). Sadly the variance was too much too handle.

Fortunately I do have a small roll on ACR that is good enough for NL2 and micro stakes LHE, FLO8, and stud8 grinding so the plan is still in motion.

One other thing, I don't have a way to keep track of the mixed game sessions. I'm thinking of posting my session profits on here. Like how much I bought in for and then how much I leave the table after I'm through grinding. Certainly not ideal but until I can find a tracker for these mix games It'll have to do.

Also, I managed to book a 5th place finish in a $100 GTD PLO 6max MTT. A small little boost to my br will help :)

ACR grind has been brutal lately. Lost 5 buyins playing HU. And before that I had actually won a few buyins and was trying to get unstuck from a previous session. So the normal up down up down roller coaster session is a good example of how I've been running lately.

Luckily I did play some Zoom 6max on Bovada and that went pretty well. The lowest stakes they offer are NL5 and I won about 4 buyins. So I should be around break even. It's just too bad that my HEM graph has me down $26 since its only tracking my ACR sessions.

I really should get that Bovada HH converter. Maybe in a week or so. The sooner the better because I've come to realize tracking my stats such as VPIP, PFR, and 3bet kind of give me a glimpse into how I'm playing. My HEM stats for my ACR sessions are being reported as:

44/11
33/12
21/11
so on and so fourth. And reading on the forums, this doesn't seem to be "optimal". Some sessions are better than others but its obvious I need to work on my bad habits like limping and playing too much trash.

I would really like to see how my bovada session went just now. I feel like its the best I've played in ages. It's also the longest session I've played yet. I just finished now. I was at it for about 3-4 hours straight. Usually I cant stand to play any longer than 1.5 hours.I really don't know what got into me but it was amazing lol. I guess thats what you would call your "A" game. I just felt like i was really playing well. I lost a few big pots but i didn't really tilt at all. I went from being up $10 to down $5-8 and just kept playing solid poker and managed to grind it back up. I lost another big pot again and usually I would go on insane tilt but its as if i was in some sort of zone. I just shook it off and continued to play solid poker and in less than 10 minutes i was back in profits. I really didn't want to stop playing lol. But alas, i got tired and felt it was okay to finally stop.

I hope i can get back in this "zone" or whatever it was later on when i wake up and start a new session. Maybe some meditation? or reading over this post?

Just something to remind me of what is possible when you play solid poker and the rewards awaiting you.

This is my 2nd journal. The first one was just casual grinding, nothing too serious. I played a few different formats but now that I have HEM I'll be putting in some serious work on & off the tables in hopes of impressing a stable/backer. I'm giving myself a time frame of 2-3 months to convince a backer that I have strong work ethic and hopefully they will consider me as a candidate for a staking deal.

This will sort of be my resume for when I try to apply at some of the stables on a certain forum so expect graphs, HHs, etc :)

Site - ACR/WPN
Games - FLO8, Stud8, LHE

Short Terms Goals/Daily Goals:
Play a respectable amount of hands 5-6 days out of the week.
End the day with session re-cap. (Interesting hands, big pots, etc)
Watch and comment on RIO theory/concept videos.

Long Term Goals:
Find a backer for for Mid stakes FLO8 & Stud8 games on Bovada. (hardly any traffic on ACR for these games)

EDIT:
Changing some things in this thread. The title was originally "Grinding 2NL & Mixed" but I've decided to focus my efforts on what I'm good at and what makes me happier. I've tried to improve my bigbet game (specifically NLHE, I still enjoy PLO but I've never really had a bankroll big enough to endure the variance.) but my strengths lie in Fixed Limit. It's also the format I enjoy the most so it's what I'm sticking to. I still enjoy studying NLHE & PLO and the occasional MTT so that's still something that motivates me to study. But for now Bigbet games are taking the backburner.

Aug. 28, 2015 | 2:59 a.m.

Oh and fortunately I played a bit of Stud8 a while ago (a very low variance game so you don't need that many big bets compared to stud hi or lhe) and managed to up my BR from $20 to $36. So now I got a few buyins for the $1 MTTs or sngs

Aug. 22, 2015 | 6:24 a.m.

Yep that's something I was thinking of trying as well. They have $1.00 9max SNGs (reg & turbo speed) rake is high from what I hear. 10% so, $1.00+$0.10

They also have $1.00+$0.10 45man SNGs which seem to be good practice for MTTs right? 7 places pay. Payout structure is:
1. $13.97
2. $9.67
3. $7.42
4. $5.62
5. $4.05
6. $2.70
7. $1.57

The other MTT SNG is a 27 man $2.00+0.20 "Beginner" where they pay 10 places instead of 7 for the 45man SNGs. The payout structure for this one is:
1. $12.15
2. $9.45
3. $7.56
4. $5.94
5. $4.86
6. $4.05
7. $3.24
8. $2.70
9. $2.16
10. $1.89

They also have $1.00+$0.10 HUSNGs (Reg & Turbo speed). What sucks about bovada is that they don't have $3.50 HUSNGs. It goes from $1 to $5.00+$0.25. So you really gotta grind it out before you can move up. They do however have $3.00+$0.30 9max turbo SNGs (3 payouts) and $3.00+$0.30 9max triple-ups (3 equal pay outs of $9.00)

Aug. 22, 2015 | 6:17 a.m.

Lets say I could only deposit once a week. The max I can deposit is $20.

I've been playing for a year now but I get tired of trying to build my BR from 2 digits to 3 digits + and I usually end up losing a big chunk by deciding to play higher stakes in hopes of moving up and playing respectable stakes. This is is obviously a recipe for disaster.

So now I'm thinking of taking a different approach. Studying and learning to play MTTs. The reason I think this would be better than what I've been trying to do this past year (cash games, running it up) is because I won't suffer burn out by grinding every day and playing my C game more than my A & B game. I would also most likely just play on the weekends and study during the week.

Now with only $20 I probably only have 2 bullets for a $10 MTT on Bovada (my main & preferred site). The good thing is I can keep depositing but only once a week. So theoretically I have a bankroll for these $10 MTTs (or $5 MTTs, or a large $20 MTT, etc etc)

My question is do you think this approach would be better then what I have been trying to do? My usual approach is to deposit $20 and grind it out playing LHE (my main game). But due to pretty much constant grinding I get stressed out and end up playing poorly after the 2 or 3rd week. Sometimes I have made my deposit last longer by taking a few breaks but i still end up playing poorly sooner or later and losing by moving up in stakes. (my goal this past year has been to get out of the micros and reach at least the $1/2 LHE stakes)

So would it best to learn MTTs and study that format? I was thinking since I would have more down time I could also use that time to improve on my mental game and do some work off the virtual felt.

The reason I am asking is also because I know MTTs are super high variance and I'm not sure if it would be worth it to play 1-3 tournaments on the weekend and turn a profit anytime soon. I mean I've seen some of the videos posted here and these guys are playing like 10-12 tournaments at a time. Can I really reduce some of that variance, edge wise by hitting the books and doing some serious studying (like with CREV, ICM tools). Would that be a good approach? Or should I just save up my money and make a large deposit enough for $1/2.

I agree with what Game Theory said; tinchoarce is just mad he got soul read/owned..
Next time you see him at the tables, smear it in face for being a cry baby lol

Aug. 8, 2015 | 5:15 a.m.

Hey guys I am posting this quetion here in mid stakes rather than low stakes as I think the more experienced PLO players will have a better idea as to whether this is a correct assumption or not;

I wanted to know if playing short stacked, say 40bb deep will reduce the variance associated with PLO. I'm asking this because I have been focusing on Fixed Limit games since my BigBet game is not good but I do want to improve. However my bankroll is not big enough if I were to play 100BBs deep at PLO5 (the smallest stakes offered on my site, Bovada)

Right now if I bought in for 40bbs at a PLO5 table I would have 65 "buyins" which is much better than 25 buyins at 100bbs. So will playing short stacked and essentially nut peddling reduce variance or will it increase it?

I know short stacking is frowned upon but I dont plan on short stacking my entire poker career. I just want to do it until i can build my roll up to about $500 so that I can have a 100BI roll for PLO5. But the main question is the variance. Will it be worse short stacking? Or am I better off playing my main games (LHE & FLO8) and waiting until i hit the $500 mark?

Aug. 5, 2015 | 9:52 a.m.

Regarding hand histories & forum reading should i be reading high stakes hand histories to try and learn how better players think and act
or should i be reading threads about hands/strat played at the micros?

Or would it be best to post micro stakes hands at the micro forums (obviously) and treat the mid/high stakes forums as read only (wrt hand histories & strat threads)

just trying to figure out if anything i read that isnt from my limits would hurt my game (aside from the obvious player tenancies based strategy ie. what he think i think he thinks types of plays)

i guess this can apply to any form of poker but in my case it's for my PLO game.
