Young guy rethinking the direction of his life

Hi everyone. This is a question directed to the more older and experienced poker players out there. And it might be interesting if you're like me (young and unexperienced) and want to make as informed decision as possible. So to get to the point my question is pursuing a career in poker worth it?

I feel like to excel at something I have to give up on other options. I am going to start studying econometrics and get into finance. I am worried that playing poker might be a waste of time. And I should spend my time studying topics more related to what I want to do for the rest of career. Which I am not sure what it is yet. Doest it mean that because I don't see myself playing poker in the future, I shouldn't put as much time and energy and time into it as I should?
Any of the long time professionals got some wise advice for me? Greatly appreciated!
