Cash - mtt transition?

So I've been playing nlh cash games for over 3 years now, started at 2nl and worked my way up to beating 200/ shot taking at 400 at one point. I think I couldve gotten higher up but I started playing full time as soon as I was beating 50nl. Currently Im grinding 100nl/200nl and would like to learn MTTs. I feel like I'm probably a marginal winner at low stakes tourneys but pretty sure I'm -ev at mid stakes+. I play tourneys once in a blue moon when I'm feeling lucky, typically $30-$100 buy in tourneys. I believe I'm up slightly lifetime, but if so by no more than a couple hundred $. Been watching some rio mtt videos here and the strategy seems significantly different (I also haven't a clue how to use ICM ect).

Im still planning to continue with cash since thats where I feel my real edge is but I always enjoyed playing tournies (as long as I make the money lol). So I want to know how difficult/long of a process is it to go from a winning low/mid stakes cash player to a winning low/mid stakes tourney player? Also not to insult MTT players but I've heard from multiple sources that it generally is softer than cash games and I too have noticed this (in terms of rec-reg ratio) and I'm wondering if this still stands true in 2017?

If I am too make this 'transiition' so to speak, what would the best approach be?
