Flopping gutshot and backdoor flushdraw OOP

Blinds: t10/t20 (8 Players) BN: 3,080
SB: 2,890
BB: 2,970 (Hero)
UTG: 2,910
UTG+1: 2,090
MP: 4,060
MP+1: 2,970
CO: 3,000
Preflop (30) Hero is BB with 7 8
3 folds, MP+1 raises to 80, 3 folds, Hero calls 60
Flop (170) J 2 9
Hero checks, MP+1 bets 85, Hero calls 85
Turn (340) J 2 9 4
Hero checks, MP+1 bets 170, Hero folds
Final Pot MP+1 wins 340

Nothing too exciting about the particular hand but I didn't like how I played it.
Looking back I guess I'd prefer check-raising the flop and leading turn but I am not sure. Check-folding flop is out of question imo.
