Set on 4 flush board NL50 HU

Blinds: $0.25/$0.50 (2 Players) SB: $57.50 (Hero)
BB: $70.39
Preflop ($0.75) Hero is SB with 2 2
BB raises to $1.50, Hero calls $1.00
Flop ($3.00) 8 2 9
Hero checks, BB bets $1.83, Hero raises to $4.50, BB calls $2.67
He had been calling a lot of check raises so I took the opportunity to build the pot.
Turn ($12.00) 8 2 9 Q
Hero bets $8.00, BB calls $8.00
Obviously I'm continuing on this card but looking back I should have probably bet a bit bigger, maybe $10/$11?
River ($28.00) 8 2 9 Q 3
Hero checks, BB bets $13.75, Hero folds
Now I didn't like this river card when it came but looking back it shouldn't have slowed me down. When I check raise the turn a lot of people assume it's with a flush draw so when the fourth diamond comes and I check I kind of turn my hand face up as not a flush (or at least not a very good one). When he bets I assume I'm beat and I fold.
Final Pot BB wins $27.50
Rake is $0.50

I think I should have put out at least a small bet on the river to limit the times where I have to fold the best hand.

Would anyone do anything different? Is it ok to check/fold that river?
