Advice on understanding preflop better

All I see online is preflop charts. You download the charts and then your told to just memorize them. But what I never see is any good explanations of the charts. Something that explains why certain hands are chosen to open, while other quite similar hands are folds. For example why do charts say open 87s, but 86s is a fold. To me they are very similar hands, similar enough that I think an explanation is needed. But you never get one.

There surely has to be a theory behind preflop, a logical way to think so that I can pick hands myself without memorizing. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Videos, Articles I'm interested in it all.
